Our story
Our story began when our son graduated from the Marines at Parris Island — a proud and unforgettable moment in our lives. While celebrating his achievement, we noticed something that stayed with us: many Marines stood on that parade deck without their families present. That moment changed everything for us.
In 2025, after visiting five different military bases across the United States and connecting with numerous VFW posts, we decided to turn our concern into action. What started as a simple weekend project quickly grew into a mission.
With our hotel connections in South Carolina and the ability to rent a minivan, we realized we could bring a family of four to Parris Island for about $700. That amount covers lodging, transportation, dinner with the Marines’ Drill Sergeants, and — most importantly — the chance for families to share a once‑in‑a‑lifetime moment with their Marine.
For the same cost, we can also bake and distribute 250 boxes of homemade biscotti, offering a small but meaningful gesture of appreciation to those who serve.
Your support helps make these experiences possible. By donating to our GoFundMe, you help families reunite, celebrate milestones, and honor the dedication of our Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers.
Our commitment to service extends beyond graduations. Over the years, we have volunteered with the VFW and helped veterans navigate the VA system so they can receive the benefits they deserve — whether for healthcare, housing, or assisted living support.
As we continue to grow, we are investing in the process of becoming a full nonprofit organization. Our goal is to complete our corporate filing and secure 501(c)(3) status by the end of 2026 so that veterans and active‑duty service members can benefit even more from HOMESST’s mission.
We are Albert and Jennifer Hess, founders of HOMESST, and we are grateful for every person who joins us in this journey. Together, we can ensure that no service member stands alone on one of the most important days of their life.
